Link Building Services That Will Not Get You Penalised

We publish our sourcing method, show you every link before it goes live, and refuse the tactics that get sites filtered. Most agencies will not do any of those three, and there is a reason.

✓ Every link disclosed and approved by you
✓ No PBNs, link farms or bought placements
✓ No long-term contracts

You Approve Every Link

Before anything goes live you see the site, the traffic, the relevance rationale and the anchor text. If you would not be comfortable telling Google how a link was acquired, it should not exist.

The fundamentals

Why Links Still Decide Rankings

Every few years somebody announces that links no longer matter. They still do, and in competitive markets they are frequently the difference between two otherwise identical sites.

A link is a vote that costs something. Publishing content is free, so content alone is a weak trust signal. A respected site choosing to link to you costs them editorial credibility, which is exactly why Google weights it.

Links are how you compete above your weight. Two sites with equal content and equal technical health will separate on authority. That is the gap links close.

And now they feed AI answers too. Models weight consensus across independent sources. Being mentioned and linked by trusted publications increasingly influences whether an AI engine names you at all.

Establish topical relevance in your niche
Drive qualified referral traffic directly
Build the consensus AI models read

Standards

What a Good Link Actually Looks Like

Domain authority scores are third-party estimates, not Google metrics, and optimising for them is how agencies end up buying links on sites nobody reads. These are the criteria we actually apply.

CRITERION 1

Real organic traffic

The site should receive meaningful organic traffic from real people. A high authority score with no traffic usually means a site built to sell links rather than to be read.

We check traffic before relevance, because a site nobody visits cannot pass much of anything.

CRITERION 2

Genuine topical relevance

A link from a respected publication in your industry is worth many from general sites. Relevance is now weighted heavily enough that an off-topic link from a big domain can be close to worthless.

CRITERION 3

Editorial context

The link should sit inside content a human wrote for a reason, surrounded by related text. Author bio links, footer links and links dropped into unrelated paragraphs all signal placement rather than endorsement.

CRITERION 4

A clean neighbourhood

We look at who else the site links to. A page linking to casinos, pharmaceuticals and unrelated commercial sites is a link farm regardless of its metrics.

CRITERION 5

Natural anchor text

Over-optimised exact match anchors are one of the clearest manipulation signals available. A healthy profile is mostly branded and natural phrasing, with exact match used sparingly.

The honest part

What We Refuse to Do

This is the section most link building pages leave out, because these tactics are cheap, fast, and profitable to sell. They are also the reason a large number of sites we audit are carrying penalties.

Private blog networks

Networks of sites existing only to link out. Google has repeatedly deindexed entire networks, taking their clients down with them. Cheap, effective briefly, and eventually catastrophic.

Paying for placements on link lists

Sites with a rate card for links are selling to everyone, including your competitors and every spam operation in your niche. Google is aware of them.

Bulk directory submissions

Hundreds of links to directories nobody uses. Worthless at best, a spam signal at worst, and still sold as a package by low-cost providers.

Automated comment and forum links

Software that posts your URL across thousands of sites. Purely a spam footprint, and it is astonishing how often it still appears in cheap packages.

Excessive link exchanges

Occasional reciprocal linking between genuine partners is normal. Systematic exchange schemes, including three-way loops designed to hide the pattern, are not.

Volume promises

Any offer of a fixed number of links per month at a low price is describing a process that cannot involve genuine editorial outreach. The arithmetic does not permit it.

Why cheap links are worse than no links

Doing nothing leaves you where you are. Bad links can leave you materially worse off, and recovery is slow and expensive.

A manual action requires a disavow file, a removal effort and a reconsideration request, which can take months. An algorithmic suppression is worse, because there is no notification and no reconsideration process. You simply stop ranking and have to work out why.

We have spent more time cleaning up other agencies' link building than building links from scratch. That is not a boast, it is an argument for choosing carefully.

⚠️

Warning signs in a link building proposal

A fixed number of links guaranteed monthly
They will not name the sites in advance
Pricing that implies minutes per link
Domain authority is the only quality measure
No mention of relevance or real traffic
Anchor text chosen entirely by them

What we do instead

Our Link Building Methods

Slower than buying links and considerably more durable. Every one of these produces links a human editor chose to publish.

📰

Digital PR

Original research, surveys and data studies pitched to journalists. The most reliable route to genuinely authoritative links, and the results tend to keep earning coverage for years.

🎙️

Expert commentary

Positioning your team as sources for journalists writing about your industry. Fast, credible, and it builds the author authority that helps in AI citation too.

📊

Original data assets

Industry benchmarks, annual surveys and analysis nobody else has. The single most linkable content type, because other people need something to cite.

✍️

Editorial guest contribution

Genuine articles for publications your audience reads, written by someone who knows the subject. Not the spun guest post networks sold in bulk.

🔧

Free tools and calculators

A useful tool in your category earns links passively for years. Expensive once, then it compounds without further outreach.

🔨

Broken link building

Finding dead resources in your niche that still have links pointing at them, and offering a genuinely better replacement.

🤝

Partnerships and community

Suppliers, industry bodies, sponsorships and local organisations. Unglamorous, relevant, and completely defensible.

🧹

Toxic link cleanup

Auditing an existing profile, identifying genuinely harmful links, pursuing removal and preparing a disavow file where warranted.

🔍

Competitor gap analysis

Which sites link to your competitors but not to you. The most efficient prospecting list available, because relevance is already proven.

AI search

Links Now Feed AI Citations Too

Consensus is what AI models trust

AI engines weight agreement across independent sources very heavily. One page claiming you are the leading provider in your category means nothing. Twelve independent publications describing you consistently creates the corroboration a model needs before it will state something as fact.

This changes the calculus on link building. A mention in a respected industry publication now does two jobs: it passes authority for traditional rankings, and it contributes to whether an AI assistant names you when someone asks for options.

Unlinked brand mentions matter here too, which is a genuine shift. Digital PR that earns a mention without a link was once considered a partial failure. For AI visibility it still counts.

🤖

Why digital PR outperforms link buying here

Real publications, which models already trust
Editorial context a model can extract
Consistent brand description across sources
Mentions count even without a link
Author credibility signals attach to you

A purchased link on a site nobody reads contributes nothing to any of this.

How we work

Our Link Building Process

Weeks
1 to 2

Backlink audit and gap analysis

Your existing profile assessed for quality and risk, toxic links identified, anchor text distribution reviewed, and a competitor gap analysis showing exactly which sites link to rivals but not to you.

Weeks
2 to 4

Strategy and asset planning

Target site criteria agreed, anchor text distribution planned to look natural, and the linkable assets identified. Most campaigns need something worth linking to before outreach can work at all.

Month
1 to 3

Asset creation and outreach

Data studies, tools or research produced, then genuine outreach to relevant publications. You see and approve every target site before we contact them.

Month
3 to 6

Placement and scaling

Links go live, get verified, and get reported with the traffic and relevance rationale for each. Successful angles get repeated; approaches that are not landing get replaced.

Ongoing

Monitoring and maintenance

Automated monitoring for lost links, links that turn nofollow, and any new toxic links appearing from sources you did not authorise, which happens more often than people expect.

Honest timeline. Genuine outreach is slow. Expect the first placements around week six to eight, meaningful profile improvement by month three to four, and ranking impact from links typically four to eight months in. Anyone promising twenty links next month is not doing outreach.

Why Choose Hyxil for Link Building

✓
You approve every link

Before outreach begins you see the site, its traffic, the relevance rationale and the intended anchor. Nothing gets built that you have not seen.

✓
We publish what we refuse

No PBNs, no rate-card placements, no bulk directories, no automated posting. Listed openly above, because you deserve to know what you are not buying.

✓
Traffic and relevance over authority scores

Domain authority is a third-party estimate. We check whether real people actually read the site before anything else.

✓
Cleanup as well as building

If you have inherited a toxic profile we audit it, pursue removals and prepare a disavow where genuinely warranted rather than reflexively.

Questions

Link Building: Frequently Asked Questions

Do backlinks still matter for SEO?+
Yes. Every few years somebody declares links dead and they remain one of the strongest ranking signals available, particularly in competitive markets where two sites have comparable content and technical health. Links also now feed AI citation, because models weight consensus across independent sources when deciding which businesses to name.
How many links do I need?+
The wrong question, and the one that leads people to buy volume packages. What matters is the gap between your profile and the sites currently outranking you for terms you want. Sometimes that is a handful of genuinely authoritative links. We assess it during the audit rather than quoting a number.
How long until link building affects rankings?+
Genuine outreach is slow. First placements typically land around week six to eight, meaningful profile improvement by month three to four, and ranking impact usually four to eight months in. Anyone promising twenty links next month is not doing outreach, they are buying placements.
Is buying links against Google guidelines?+
Yes, explicitly. Exchanging money for links that pass ranking signals violates Google spam policies, and the penalties range from a manual action to algorithmic suppression with no notification. Plenty of agencies do it anyway because it is fast and profitable. We do not, and we say so plainly so you know what you are buying.
What is a toxic backlink and should I disavow?+
A toxic link comes from a site built to manipulate rankings rather than to be read, such as a link farm or a hacked site. Google ignores most low-quality links automatically, so disavowing reflexively is unnecessary and occasionally harmful. We recommend it only where there is a clear pattern of manipulation, usually inherited from previous SEO work.
What is digital PR and how is it different?+
Digital PR earns coverage by creating something genuinely newsworthy, usually original research or data, and pitching it to journalists. The links come from real publications with real readers, which makes them both more valuable and more durable. It is slower and more expensive than buying links, and it is the only method that also builds the AI consensus signals that matter now.
Does anchor text matter?+
Very much, and over-optimising it is one of the clearest manipulation signals available. A natural profile is mostly branded anchors and ordinary phrasing, with exact match keywords used sparingly. Agencies that request exact match anchors on every placement are building a pattern Google detects easily.
Are guest posts still effective?+
Genuine editorial contributions to publications your audience actually reads are effective and always have been. The guest post networks selling placements in bulk are a different thing entirely, and Google has targeted them repeatedly. The distinction is whether an editor chose to publish you or a rate card did.
Can you fix a link penalty?+
Usually. A manual action requires a full profile audit, removal outreach, a disavow file and a reconsideration request, which can take several months. Algorithmic suppression is harder because there is no notification and no reconsideration process, so diagnosis matters more. We will tell you honestly what is recoverable and roughly how long it will take.
Do unlinked brand mentions have value?+
More than they used to. For traditional SEO a mention without a link passes no direct authority, though it can contribute to entity understanding. For AI visibility it counts meaningfully, because models build their picture of your business from every mention across the web regardless of whether it links. That has changed how we value digital PR coverage.
Will you tell me which sites you are approaching?+
Yes, always, and in advance. You see the site, its organic traffic, the relevance rationale and the intended anchor text before we contact anyone. Any agency unwilling to name targets in advance is almost certainly using methods they would rather you did not examine.
Do I need link building at all?+
Not always, and we will say so. If your technical foundation is broken or your content is thin, links will not fix either and the money is better spent elsewhere first. Link building works when the site deserves to rank and authority is the remaining gap. The audit tells you which situation applies.
